David Bell had a dunk in this romp in Bensenville.
It didn't take long to decide Grayslake Central's first regional contest. Mike Brumm had a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter on Tuesday night as the Rams topped Northtown Academy 72-34 at the Class 3A Fenton Regional.
Central (21-6) set the tone early, scoring 26 points in the opening quarter.
"We were just getting to the basket," said Central coach Tim Bowen. "We were getting transition baskets."
Brumm and Andrew Sipes led a balanced attack with 14 points each. Josh Rappaport came off the bench to score 9 points. Mike Davis added 7 points.
"We've never had this experience being a No. 2 seed," Bowen said. "We haven't had the experience of playing a lower-seeded team."
The regional crown will take place on Friday night in Bensenville. The likely opponent will be the home team from Fenton. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
RECAP: It was all about the defense.
The town of Huntley earned a treat last Saturday night. The home team was playing for a Fox Division crown in the Fox Valley Conference. All they had to do was to knock off visiting Grayslake Central.
Huntley led just once at 17-16. The hosts didn't score a basket for the final 7 1/2 minutes. Central reached the 20-win plateau with a 43-31 victory.
"Words really can't describe it," said sophomore Andrew Sipes. "It's like we were on a roller coaster and it was the movie "Facing the Giants."
Sipes (10 points) twice stole the ball from a Huntley player and raced down court for an easy layup.
"They were a little sloppy with the ball," noted Rams' Alex Anderson. "We just grabbed it."
A gorgeous follow-up tip by Jared Zygmunt closed the third quarter with the Rams up 29-24.
Brumm finished with 11 points. Anderson added 8 points.
Anderson reflected on his team that more than doubled its wins from the year before.
"We lost 7 games by 5 points or less last year," he said. "This year we are finishing those game. It's having that experience."
